Discrimination
Discrimination can take many forms. It can happen at any time, to anybody. It can be direct or indirect, sexual, racial, about a disability and be physical or verbal.
Direct Discrimination
This could be discrimination because of someone’s sex, colour of their skin, a disability, religion or age. It’s nearly always illegal and if you think it’s happening to you speak to your personal adviser straight away .
Indirect Discrimination
This can be difficult to detect. For instance, it could be when one person is less likely to be awarded a job because of the working conditions. It may be due to working hours, place of work, or type of work. It is often quite tricky to prove so if you think you are being discriminated against go and see your personal adviser.
Sexual Discrimination
Jobs cannot be advertised for men or women only although there are a few exceptions. If you think you are being treated unfairly just because of your gender, see your personal adviser.
For more details call the Equal Opportunities Commission on 0845 601 5901 or go to www.eoc.org.uk
Racial Discrimination
If you are being treated less well because of your colour, nationality, religion, race or ethnicity you are being discriminated against, and it’s illegal.
If you feel that this has happened you should get advice by speaking to a personal adviser as soon as possible. For more details contact the Commission for Racial Equality on 0207 828 7022. www.cre.gov.uk.
Disability Discrimination
If you are offered a lower standard of service because you are disabled you are being discriminated against. If you are not offered a job because you have a disability you are being discriminated against. In both cases you are being treated illegally. For more advice about this call the Disability Rights Commission on 0845 762 2633 or go to www.drc-gb.org
